Group Ride in Chicago - 37.8 miles

This was a great ride with great people.  I definitely had to work to keep up and not feel I was the one slowing down the group.  At times I felt a bit squirrelly with keeping the bike straight and stable.  This will work itself out as I gain experience I am sure.

Most of the ride was on streets with a small percentage on paved trails.  Surprisingly most of the roads had light traffic.

We departed about 12:30pm finished about 3:40pm.  We rode from Chicago to Cabelas in Indiana and back. Weather:  50° and sunny, Feels like 46°, 10 mph ESE wind and  Humidity 29%

My Garmin was about 6.5 miles short as along the ride I hit the pause button and did not hit resume till some time later. Manually adjusted time and distance on the website.

The photo below was taken just before we headed.  From left to right:  Jason Ward (me), Tam, Clay and Shawn.

BEFORE
I purchased a 2013 Trek Madone 4.5 less than 1 week before this ride.  It was the week it rained for a couple days in row and a lot of peoples basements flooded.  I put about 20 miles on this bike before I did this ride.  Previous to this road bike I rode a hybrid - big change.

Below picture Tam snapped this blackmail photo of me laying on the ground resting as I was genuinely hurting.  This ride was longer and the pace being faster than I was used to.

AFTER
In addition I was wearing a non vented rain jacket not made for cycling and a thermal long sleeve shirt.  Sweat was dripping from my cuffs - such a horrible feeling.  My toes were completely numb.  Later found that the cleat position on my shoes was too far forward and needed further adjustment.

Goodbye 2012 Trek 7.5 fx

I finally made the decision to trade in my hybrid for a road bike.  I now know that I like 2 things ... road cycling and touring.  I am getting rid of the hybrid because I want dedicated bikes for each road cycling and touring.  Yes, I can do both on the hybrid but I have test rode the other bikes and they feel dedicated bike are a better choice.

I ordered this 2012 Trek 7.5 fx new from GoodSpeed Cycles in Homewood, Illinois (my LBS) on May 9, 2012.  I chose this bike for several reasons that in retrospect were not all accurate.  My primary reason for choosing a hybrid over a road bike is that I thought that my big belly would not allow me to comfortably utilize the drop bars.  I never even test rode a road bike to validate this wild assumption.

As best as I can estimate I put about 1,200 miles on the fx.  I did not have a bike computer for a couple months and I did not have a Garmin till 2013 so this is a best guess.

The below picture is of my beloved hybrid as it is handed over to GoodSpeed Cycles for trade-in where I originally purchased it new.

4.5 Mi Running in Homewood, Illinois

Jason Ward Running
Jason Ward Running
This run is my longest run outdoors besides the 2013 Chicago Shamrock Shuffle I participated in early April.  I am wearing an event jersey as it is the only long sleeve thermal running shirt I own.  Sad right?

Right is a picture of me - Jason Ward running or at least stopped to take a quick picture of me with the golf course behind me near the end of my run.

It was a great day even though it was a bit chilly

Weather: 41° - Feels like 36° - 8 mph E wind - Humidity 70%

Cold Weather Cycling - FAIL

Went out for a group ride this morning and only made it about 5 miles (22 minutes) the headed back.  We headed south for about 1 mile.  No issues here.  Starting to warm my core up.  Now we head west and into the 18-24 mph wind.  I only lasted about 4 miles before I had to turn back.  Seems like everything was against me and nothing for me.

What I did wrong:

  1. My toes went numb and the skin on the fronts of my ankles were exposed and getting windburned.  I need to purchase thermal shoe covers and possibly wool cycling socks ($5 - $30).
  2. My fingers went numb.  I was wearing full finger gloves but they were not wind proof.  I need to purchase a pair of windproof thermal gloves ($10 - $100).
  3. My water bottle was filled with ice and water so by the time I needed a sip the contents were solid enough I could not squeeze the bottle ( I did not fill the bottle myself).  Fill bottles with plain tap water ($0).
  4. My legs were starting to get really cold on the ride back.  I was wearing a pair of light weight running/warm-up pants with cycling bibs underneath.  I need to purchase a pair of thermal tights/bibs ($50 - $120).
  5. I was wearing 2 thermal long sleeve shirts so my core was warm.  Maybe too warm.  I was also wearing a rather loose wind/rain proof jacket.  I need to purchase an appropriate cycling specific wind/rain proof jacket ($50 - $100).
What I did right:
  1. I wore a balaclava under my helmet.  This protected my neck and ears from the wind and cold ($5 - $30).
Summary:

My head and core was comfortable.  My fingers toes and legs were hurting.  It is end of the cold season here in Illinois so I will keep my eye out for sales on cold weather cycling gear primarily for my hands, feet and legs otherwise I'll catch is again next season.

I finished my ride with a total of 10.35 miles in 44 minutes.  Average speed of 13.8 on my Trek 7.5 fx hybrid bike.

Ironman Triathlon Training Training Plan I

Came across this training plan while searching to answer the question:  "What type and amount of training does it take to prepare for an Ironman distance triathlon?".

This particular plan jives well with my current mentality and training style.  This plan gives me a great sense of what base I need to start with when I seriously plan to schedule my first Ironman triathlon.

Jason Ward 25977 Shamrock Shuffle Results 2013
Jason Ward 25977 Shamrock Shuffle Results 2013
This was my first run of any type at this distance.  Previous runs have been at the 5k (3.11 mile) distance or shorter.  This race was a challenge for me.  I did walk at 2 points in the race.  Both were at the bottom of short inclines over bridges for no more than 1 minute.  This was to avoid my HR hitting 190bpm ... seriously.

My goal time for this 8k run was 73 minutes.  I figured at worse case I could maintain a 14:30 pace for 5 miles.  The morning of the race I was feeling fresh and changed my goal to finishing in under 1 hour and paced myself accordingly using my Garmin 910XT.  I checked my pace to ensure I was under the 12min/mile pace and this worked well.

I am happy with my time.  It marks a real achievement in my life with respect to my fitness and health.  I currently weigh about 290lbs and started running 7 months ago when I was 300+ lbs.

I look forward to running this race next year and every year after for as long as I can.  I have already set a goal of finishing this run sub 50 minutes.  That is a 10min/mile pace.  If I can lose more weight and become more fit I believe I can easily accomplish this goal.

March 2013 Training Totals

I had no events in March. My health was good for the entire month. No sickness, illnesses or pains. Last month I did have a couple of pains in my lower calf muscle just above my achilles and ankle but more in the muscle. Turns out I just needed new shoes. I now have 3 pairs of shoes I rotate.

My totals for the month are as follows:
Swim = 3.55 mi (down 21% from last month at 4.3 mi)
Bike = 194.26 mi (up 197% from last month at 98.28 mi)
Run = 39.05 mi (up 133% from last month at 29.26 mi)
Walk = 11.15mi (up 425% from last month at 2.62 mi)
Total = 248.01 mi ( up 184% from last month at 134.46 mi)

I spent a total of 26:10 hours training between 41 workouts on 25/31 days.

My goal for April is to hit the training even harder after the 8k race on 4/7. Concentrating on longer (90 minutes) easy rides and runs with a bit of weight training mixed in.

Last month my goal was to train long and hard all month primarily running. I wanted to have the same cycle, walk and swim mileage totals but I am aiming to complete 60 miles (double) of Feb. run total.  Instead of doubling the run I doubled the bike.  This is cool but I still need to increase volume for the run.
